Paris and Marshal Pétain Paris au Maréchal Paris, printed on the presses of the École Estienne, 1942 Loose-leaf quarto, printed on Arches tinted vellum with a filled half-leather binding, original slipcase and cover Illustrated with 10 intaglio engravings in the text and 10 intaglio engravings as inserts First edition, no. 85/200 Autographed copy signed by Marshal Pétain Very fine condition *Paris au Maréchal* (1942) refers to a propaganda campaign by the Vichy regime, carried out both in the form of a prestige publication and a series of symbolic events aimed at reaffirming the capital’s allegiance to Marshal Pétain, despite the German occupation. The book traces the Marshal’s entire life, from his time with the Dominicans at Arcueil to his role as Head of State. A collective work commissioned and printed by the City of Paris, with a total print run of 200 copies. It brings together texts from a range of contributors such as Sertillanges, Henry Bordeaux, Champion, Duffieux, General Serrigny, Bonnard, Vaudoyer, Chaumeix, Suarez and Paul Valéry – without the latter’s explicit consent – along with illustrations celebrating the ‘saviour of France’. The aim was to demonstrate that Paris, although situated in occupied territory, remained the heart of the “National Revolution” and remained loyal to the Head of State based in Vichy. All copies were handed over to the Marshal’s office to be distributed as gifts, with different grades of binding or slipcases depending on the recipient’s importance or rank.
