Part of the correspondence refers to his lecture tours, his meetings with Marshal Pétain, and his writing, notably his biography of Joachim Carvallo. Interned in Tours, Benjamin became a scathing witness to the Liberation, lambasting General de Gaulle—whom he described as a ‘morose bungler’—and denouncing what he termed the ‘stupidity’ of the new regime. He recounts Pétain’s final moments before his judges, news of Charles Maurras’s imprisonment, and his own conflict with the local authorities, such as his head-on confrontation with Jean Meunier, the mayor of Tours.
