Description
Robert RAMEL (1929–1997). Driftwood, 1972 A composition of painted driftwood on a wooden plinth, signed on the plinth. H: 61 cm – W: 30 cm – D: 20 cm. In an interview, Robert Ramel explained: “I wanted to leave the block in its natural shape and create a non-figurative sculpture. (I don’t like the term ‘abstract’; in sculpture, it means nothing.) I began carving it because I had to remove the bits of rotten wood. When I’d finished, I realised as I turned it that the block had taken the shape of an ear; then, running my hand over the entire surface, I felt the line of the neck emerge. From there, I carved a head. That’s the influence of the material. That’s the adventure.”
