Description
René KNAPEN (1932), "La locomotive humaine Émil Zatopek (recordman du monde de 1947 à 1959)", oil on panel signed lower right, 119.5 x 80 cm.
Born in 1932, René Knapen is a Belgian artist who trained at the Académie Saint-Luc in Liège. He has exhibited in Brussels, Liège, Amsterdam, Munich and Basel. A close friend of René Magritte, he developed an early taste for suggestion and double entendre. Between black humour, sensuality and tragedy, his universe ventures more directly into flesh, fable and naked humanity.
The work on show at the auction reveals Knapen's keen sense of line, which reflects the exacting standards of the industrial designer he once was: a line of surgical precision, where the rigour of the drawing combines with the power of movement.
Presented for the first time in France at the René Knapen exhibition at the Galerie des Orfèvres (June 2025), the artist's work met with great critical success.
