BADGE OF MINIATURES OF ERNEST
MAXIMILIAN ZORN OF BULACH (1786–1868)
Black ribbon with gold braid of the Swabian Order of Imperial Knights
of the Holy Roman Empire, featuring
two bars: - one of the Swabian Order of Imperial Knights
of the Holy Roman Empire. In gold, engraved with the motto
of the Order ‘STAND HAFT UND AUFRICHTIG’, adorned
in the centre with a medallion on a blue enamelled background depicting St
George slaying the dragon. Reverse with two attachment loops
(old repair). 47 x 18 mm. - a bar with three
miniatures. In gold (remnants of a cock’s head hallmark), with three ovals
adorned with a Fleur-de-lis cross, a Maltese Order and a Legion
of Honour, in silver, gold and enamel (significant chips). 45 x 20 mm.
Gross weight: total: 12.04 g.
History: the Order of the Imperial Knights of the Holy Roman Empire was awarded to
several members of the Zorn de Bulach family who held this order. Ernest’s father,
Antoine Joseph, wears this order (referred to as the Imperial Order
of St George) on a sash with a black ribbon trimmed with gold braid in a portrait (available on
Gallica). Ernest had been a Knight of the Legion of Honour since 1813, and a Knight
of Malta since 4 October 1803.
