Description
ATTRIBUTED TO ALEXANDRO VAROTARI, KNOWN AS ‘IL PADOVANINO’ (1588–1649). The Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist; Jesus pointing to the cross of his crucifixion, carried by two cherubs. Red chalk on paper. Monogram in pen and brown ink ‘A P’ and ‘Padoanino 99’ at the bottom centre. On the reverse, a red chalk sketch and an inscription in pen ‘g.100 ’ (Lord Somers ?), preserved under glass in an antique carved and gilded wooden frame decorated with a frieze of palmettes. Marks on the reverse: A. (Alexander, Prince of Yugoslavia) and M-P (Maria Pia, Princess of Savoy). Signs of age and small losses to the frame. View: H.: 26.5 cm - W.: 37 cm.
