Description
TABLEWARE SET OF EMPEROR
ALEXANDER III FOR THE GATCHINA PALACE.
By the Korniloff Manufactory, Saint Petersburg, 1883–1894.
White porcelain plate, round in shape with scalloped edges
embellished with gold, decorated on the rim with the double-headed eagle
of the Romanovs, depicted in the ‘old style’.
Good condition, signs of age on the gilding.
Mark on the reverse: Korniloff Brothers Manufactory.
Diam.: 24.5 cm.
History: The design of this plate is based on that created by the
Imperial Manufactory for Emperor Alexander
III in 1883, and originally comprising 19,000 pieces. The difference in the
imperial service for the Gatchina Palace lies in the treatment of the double-headed eagle,
deliberately rendered in the ‘old style’. Used by Alexander III as
tableware in his official residence at Gatchina, it was also used by
his son, Tsar Nicholas II.
