EXQUISITE BIBLE OR MISSAL COVER.
Orthodox Church, late 18th – early 19th century.
The background is densely embroidered with spun gold and silver thread, cannetille and lame,
mainly in couching and guipure; the saints
are embroidered in reserve in polychrome silk using
split stitch and knot stitch, enhanced with freshwater pearls.
Asymmetrical flap fastened with braided ball buttons embroidered
with a Virgin and Child and holy figures; on the reverse,
a depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon.
Inscription in Slavonic on the back, lining in satin and taffeta
brocaded with silver thread. Slight wear but in good overall condition.
