Body of a revolutionary drum. Made of light wood, the drumhead is entirely painted with a design depicting a medallion bearing the inscription ‘Liberté égalité’ set against a bundle of four tricolour flags, a lictor’s fasces and a Phrygian cap. It is also decorated with four motifs featuring crossed sabres and swords. Wrought-iron nails and tensioners. The interior of the drum body bears remnants of pencil inscriptions, including the first name ‘Antoine’, and the remains of a manufacturer’s label reading ‘à la palette Remélanger.. At the corner of Rue Neuve… Paris’ with a list of the various instruments sold (drum, bassoon, etc.). The hoops, tensioners and skins are missing. The medallion bearing the motto has a hole in it, probably for a nail. Diameter: 41 cm. Height: 32 cm. Revolutionary period. Related item: A drum very similar, if not identical, in the collections of the Limburg Museum, cited as having come from the troops that conquered the southern Netherlands in 1794. This drum also lacks hoops and skins, and likewise has a hole in the medallion bearing the motto.
