Infantry sabre of the Compagnie Franche de Saint-Flour (Auvergne). Leather-covered hilt with filigree and copper inlay. Brass mountings; guard with one main prong and two secondary prongs connected to a small shell-shaped piece. Straight quillon. Thick, curved blade with a flat back and hollow sides, marked in gold lettering ‘Compagnie Franche de St Flour en Auvergne’. Leather scabbard with two brass fittings. With its sabre belt made from bleached buffalo leather. Length: 75.5 cm. ABE (minor wear and uniform pitting on the blade). Second half of the 18th century. As early as 1789, following news of the revolutionary unrest in Paris, a free company was formed in Saint-Flour (Cantal). However, free companies had existed throughout the country under the Ancien Régime.
