Description
A fine, deluxe Model 1896 sabre, for a cavalry officer. Handle covered in stingray skin with filigree. Copper-plated brass mount, very finely chiselled in the Amati style; the cap is decorated with oak and laurel leaves, whilst the symmetrical guard features oak and laurel leaves, foliage scrolls and fish. The cap is adorned with a silver motif featuring a marquis’s crown, with the remains of the motto ‘OHAP ONAY’. The mount is hallmarked by the manufacturer ‘Petitfils & Bailhache’. Straight blade with a flat back, engraved with “Cavalry officer’s sabre MLE 1896-1RE, made by the Chatellerault National Arms Manufactory, April 1914”, and hollow edges, one of which is signed “V.Petitfils, 41 Rue Richelieu, Paris”. Scabbard made of nickel-plated sheet iron (with oxidation) featuring a single ring and a strap. Length: 113 cm. Presented with an officer’s sword knot featuring a tassel in gold-coloured braid. ABE.
