Description
Aloïs De Beule (1861–1935) (Attr) 'Our Lady of the Congo' patinated terracotta (1891), Gothic Revival. An antique sculpture 'Our Lady of the Congo.' In the foreground is a depiction of a kneeling African figure, freed from the shackles of slavery. Beside him is a lion and a shield, standing proudly in front of Our Lady with Child. Commissioned for a church in Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and ordered in 1891. According to historical records, it was commissioned from a 'Master Sculptor' in Ghent, and is therefore attributed to Aloïs de Beule or the 'Bressers-Blanchart' workshop. Circle of School of Arts, Sint-Lucas, Ghent, 19th century. Patinated terracotta. (50 x 146 x 36 cm)
