An exceptionally large orthodoxe‘Proskynetarion’ or Pilgrim Icon, depicting Jerusalem and scenes from the life of Christ, oil on canvas. 19th/20th century. An exceptionally large version of the Proskynetarion, featuring images of Jerusalem and the life of Jesus Christ. On the left is an image of the Mother of God Eleousa, surrounded by many small medallions depicting the 12 Apostles and scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. At the top are images from the Book of Genesis.Further down are images such as the Dormition of the Mother of God. On the right is an image of Christ Pantocrator, with depictions of the Life of Christ and the 12 Apostles. At the top are depictions of the Transfiguration, the Ascension of Elijah, the Martyrdom of Stephen, and the Martyrdom of a saint. In the center are images of Jerusalem and Christ Enthroned with the 12 Apostles. Further along is a large depiction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, with small churches and their respective saints above it. Below that are specific scenes from the Passion narrative and the Passion cycle, including the Arma Christi. Across the entire proskynetarion are scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The proskynetarion was painted in Jerusalem by an Orthodox Iconograph and taken by pilgrims to the homeland to mount and venerate. Oil on canvas. Late 19th/early 20th century.
