Voluntary lot
Description
French infantry officer saber 1845/1855 of 93 cm with its scabbard with double rings of bélières.
The rivet is original. The privately purchased blade is unmarked. It is 2.8 cm wide at the base and 77.5 cm long. There is a small amount of surface oxidation that needs cleaning.
The hilt is in bronze with fine engravings and a right-angled return (1855) of the quillon. It is fitted with a horn grip that shows some dents and wear and still has its period watermark.
The scabbard shows signs of combat damage and non-perforating oxidation. It has been coated with tar or black paint for preservation. Needs cleaning.
A fine relic of the 1870 war.
