Description
[PHOTOGRAPHY] [LATIN AMERICA] Eugène MAUNOURY - Very fine and rare album of 19 original photographs circa 1858 by Imbert and Maunoury, pastedown. Vintage binding richly decorated in polychrome in the manner of romantic cartonnage (wear and tears), entitled Vistas de Chile, Fotografia Imbet Y Maunoury Valparaiso.
Several views showing emblematic places in Valparaiso such as the Iglesia La Matriz del Salvador, or the San Jeronimo de Valparaiso monastery, but also places and monuments or statues that have disappeared or been transformed. Some of the photographs show gatherings of people posing for the photo, while others are more natural, obviously taken on the spot.
Each photograph measures 10.5x15.5cm, with the stamp Imbert Y Maunoury affixed underneath, photos a little faded.
Eugène Maunoury was 26 when he moved to Santiago-du-Chile in 1856. The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds an album of photographs with views of Santiago and Valparaiso that can be attributed to him. After leaving the capital, he went to work in the large Chilean port of Valparaiso, where he was associated with a certain Imbert, about whom nothing is known. In November 1858, the two men had a front-row seat to witness the devastation caused by the city's fire.
He was Nadar's privileged correspondent, whose iconic N he affixed to the portraits he later took in Peru.
A rare record of Chile in the mid-19th century, by one of the leading French photographers of the period in this part of the world.
