Description
HENRI IV (1553-1610). Signed letter, addressed to the conseillers, avocats and procureurs généraux de la Cour de Parlement de Tours, countersigned by the Secrétaire d'État Martin Ruzé. Camp de Darnetal [before Rouen], 11 December 1591. 1 p. small folio. Address on verso. BEAUTIFUL LETTER ON JUSTICE. Beautiful letter written during the siege of Rouen. "If the good people do not receive some honour and reward for their merits and the bad people the punishment they have served, it is not to be hoped that affairs will succeed happily and that those who are given over to evil living without reprehension of punishment will not allow themselves to indulge in all sorts of mischief". The King therefore invited the magistrates to work to ensure that crimes did not go unpunished, in particular those affecting the general interests of the country, "including the perfidy of the Sr de Vaucelles, now a prisoner in our city of Tours, who, having delivered Mirebe by treachery or Mirebeau to our rebels has been the cause of the death of several people and the entire ruin of an infinite number of others". The King demanded that his trial be held within his walls "we order [...] that he be judged in the great chamber of our palace and not elsewhere [...]". Fine signature. Expert appraisal: Mathilde Lalin-Leprevost
