Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875). Six studies of the head of the Empress Eugénie. India ink and sepia wash on paper. Bears the stamp of the Romanian prince George Stirbey (Lugt 2317). Dim. 20x13 cm at sight. A close friend of the sculptor, Stirbey took Carpeaux in at his villa in Nice when his financial situation deteriorated, and looked after him during his last days, until his death. Stirbey bought a trunk of drawings from the master, donating 174 to the Louvre, 693 to the École des Beaux-Arts and 693 to the Musée de Valenciennes, all bearing the same collection stamp as the present drawing. Our drawing is of great interest and was kept by Stirbey for his personal collection.
