Description
Georges Paul LEROUX (1877-1957). Study of a sky, no. 120 from a notebook of drawings by the artist dated 1897. Watercolour on paper laid down on canvas. Size 15.3x25 cm. Provenance: Galzerie Saint-Martin, Strasbourg. Georges Leroux, a pupil of Bonnat, had been exhibiting sombre landscapes in rare colours at the Salon since 1904. With their great decorative rhythms and lack of modelling, they were related to Gauguin's synthetism. In 1913, at the Devambez gallery, he exhibited 70 landscapes collected in Italy in the Roman countryside and around Florence. After 1918, he established himself as one of the most realistic and truthful evocators of the dramas of war".
