Description
Gendarme’s shako from the Republican Guard Infantry Regiment, 1928–1933 model. Cardboard shell covered in fine dark midnight blue cloth, crown and brim in black patent leather, cockade stamped from tinplate. Fake chin strap made of gilded brass chain. At the top of the cap, a gold braid with a red stripe down the centre. On either side, decorated with V-shaped chevrons in gold braid. Frontal ornament in stamped brass bearing the coat of arms of the City of Paris (a single-masted galley, the motto ‘Fluctuat nec Mergitur’; two medals appear in the lower section: the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre). Visor in black patent leather edged with a brass band. Inner cap with wolf’s-tooth trim. With a black patent leather chin strap. It is fitted with a red and olive cock’s plume with a gilded brass base. Enclosed is the full regulation set, Model 1933, comprising the two shoulder clovers and the red fourragère/aiguillette corresponding to the decoration on the Republican Guard’s tunic.
