HISTORICAL NOTE: The tosei-gusoku is the ultimate form of Japanese armour, developed from the 16th century onwards to meet the demands of foot and gun combat. During the Edo period (1615-1868), armour became more an object of prestige and ceremony than war equipment, which explains the care taken with its decoration and lacquering.
