GERMANY - WORLD WAR II, Iron Cross 2nd class - 1813-1939, centre decorated with the swastika (blurred on the photos), ribbon with the colours of the German Empire - L. 18 cm approx. (wear) COMMENTS: The Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) was awarded for gallantry in action or meritorious military service in wartime. Introduced by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars, it could theoretically be awarded to any soldier, from foot soldier to general. Merit took precedence over rank.
