COMMENTS: Born in Courtrai and died in Brussels, Louis Robbe (Henri's brother) drew enthusiastically as a child. He studied art, but initially practised as a lawyer and was even a justice of the peace for a time. He was taught by Verboeckhoven, and for a time retained his 'blaireautée' style. However, he knew how to replace the studio canvas with a study of nature. He protected Charles de Groux, the instigator of the realist movement in Belgium. His last years were overshadowed by acute neurasthenia. He settled in Brussels in 1840. He took up painting seriously from 1833, but had already won a medal in 1830. In 1837, he won a medal in Brussels and, in 1855, the same prize was awarded to him at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Knight of the Order of Leopold in 1843, Officer in 1863, he was made Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1845.
