This highly expressive portrait reflects Paul Cabet's admiration for his master François Rude. Born in Dijon, Paul Cabet began his training there before continuing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under David d'Angers and François Rude. He later worked in Rude's studio and married his niece in 1853. Paul Cabet produced a portrait of his master, a bronze version of which adorns Rude's tomb.
