Deeply committed to the study of the nude, Lucien Schnegg's La Jeune Heaulmière conveys great purity of line, making this work, along with the marble La Vigne, one of his most sought-after models.
The son of a cabinetmaker, Lucien Schnegg began his career as a decorator and ornamentalist. Keen to find his true calling, he went to Paris and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1884, where he joined Alexandre Falguière's studio. From 1887 to 1890, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français, then at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1892.
Lucien Schnegg struggled to make a living from his art and became a practitioner in Auguste Rodin's studio. Rodin saw in Schnegg an authentic artist with "the courage to be a true sculptor, drawing everything from himself in the manner of the reformers". Although his work at Rodin's studio was demanding, it enabled him to develop his own personality. Alongside Antoine Bourdelle, he became part of a "middle movement" in modern sculpture, adopting a classicist approach to sculpture. Renouncing academic art and the avant-garde, he pursued this approach by bringing together a circle of sculptors known as the Bande à Schnegg, including Charles Despiau, Jane Poupelet, Louis De- jean, Robert Wlérick and François Pompon.
