The son of a sculptor, Arno Breker went to the Düsseldorf School of Fine Arts in 1919 before moving to Paris in 1925, where he studied with Despiau and admired the work of Maillol. After a stay in Italy, he returned to Germany in 1937. Influenced by the canons of ancient Greece, he sculpted athletic figures.
