After obtaining a doctorate in law at the Sorbonne and travelling to Canada and South America, Salomé Vénard began training as a sculptor in 1936. Close to the sculptors Robert Wlérick, Henri Laurens and Mateo Hernandez, she specialised in direct carving on stone and wood. A frequent visitor to Parisian artistic circles, she produced a portrait of the poet Joe Bousquet. From 1954 onwards, she took on numerous public commissions as part of the "1% artistic" scheme.
