Schaeffner "Le Photo-Carnet" spy camera, n°4198, circa 1890. As is. N.B. Jean-Marie PRADES : Photo-Carnet. Circa 1890. Sold by A. Schaeffner. Twenty-four 4 x 4 cm plates. This camera is the French version of Dr R. Krügener's 'Carnet photographique', known as 'Dr Krügener's Taschenbuch-Camera'. Sold by Schaeffner in Paris, it differs slightly from the original model. The plates are still changed using a pull-tab, which moves back and forth to transport the plates from one compartment to another. The guillotine shutter is loaded by pulling a string and, unlike the German model, the second string used to release the spring is not attached to the casing but is driven by a knob fixed to a groove. Another difference is that the French model is equipped with a reflex viewfinder, the frosted area of which is located on the top of the camera.
