Description
Photography, automobile. Set of three citrate prints. Two matted and one framed. On the fronts of two mounts: "Cliché Sigriste - races Paris-Madrid 1903. Birnbaum on buggy", visual size approximately 13 x 18 cm. Other photographs of cars, races and miscellaneous are attached. As is. N.B. Jean-Marie PRADES: 13 x 18 cm photo taken by J. G. Siegrist. Car no. 48, a Morse driven by a man named Rival. The 1903 Paris-Madrid race was stopped in Bordeaux because it had become too deadly. Mr Siegrist had time to photograph it in the company of two operators. Here is G. Mareschal's account, which appeared in 'Nature': 'Mr Sigriste had gone to take up position with two assistants, Mr Ducom and Mr Tabarry, beyond Tours, between Montbazon and Saint-Maure, at a point where the road had a long straight stretch allowing the drivers to reach their maximum speed, i.e. 120 to 140 kph. The first shots were taken at 7.30 in the morning and the last at 2.30 in the afternoon. The speed of the camera, with a 2 mm slit, is 1/2500th of a second. The distance from the subject to the camera was 8 to 9 m. Mr Sigriste had a 13 x 18 cm camera, and his assistants had two 9 x 12 cm cameras. Equipped with spare magazines and a bag for recharging, they managed to take around 350 shots. Visuals and text " Autour d'une collection 2 " Collection JMP Club Niépce Lumière, p. 103. Expert Isabelle Cazeils. Provenance: Jean-Marie PRADES Collection. Photographs.
