On 20 May 1922, the British passenger ship SS Egypt sank off the coast of Brittany, between Ouessant and the island of Sein, in waters approximately 120 metres deep. In the ship’s vault, which was carrying gold bars, silver bars and various jewels, there were 37 crates containing banknotes. On 10 June 1932, an Italian salvage vessel, the Artigio, managed to recover a crate containing 15,000 rupees in banknotes from the Princely State of Hyderabad in India (out of a total of 250 million rupees contained in the vault). These banknotes, printed by the British firm ‘Waterlow & Sons’ of London, were dried in the sun on the deck of the Artiglio by the sailors themselves
