Description
GAUL - CELTIC Suessiones. Stater with the ‘ND’ eye (late first third of the 1st century BC). LT.8020 - DT.167-168 var. - Scheers 174-175; Gold – 5.83 g – 18.5 mm – 12 h A few fine scratches on the obverse, appearing to have been lightly cleaned. Very Good to Very Good-Plus. The gold coins of the Suessiones are grouped in Series 26, which comprises the staters of var. 1 ‘with the eye’, var. 2 ‘with the anchor’ and var. 3 ‘with the shield’. Added to these are the CRICIRV staters, which belong to the more recent Series 63 (metal tri-classification). The connection with the double-sided Belgian staters on a short flan is quite clear in terms of the obverse design. In the ‘eye’ variety, the laurel leaves are symmetrical in relation to the ‘bar’; within the same variety, the laurel leaves may be open outwards or inwards (as on our stater).
