GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Belgium. Short-flan stater ‘with an Indian head’, Class I, var. 2, ND (first half of the 1st century BC). LT.8597 - DT.158 - Scheers 87-88 - Sills 438 (same dies) G-B Cb1 class 2a; Gold – 6.5 g – 18 mm – 2 h MP specimen no. 188 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 1997. Wide, oval flan for this type. Obverse well centred but somewhat soft. Reverse struck more vigorously. TTB. The three staters nos. 188–190 in the collection perfectly illustrate the ‘stylisation’ or ‘degeneration’ – depending on one’s perspective – of coins on short blanks. Minted from the same reverse die, and probably the same obverse die, these three staters (acquired from the same dealer) likely share a common provenance. The Sills 438 (Scheers collection, ex-Platt) is also from the same dies; it is graded ‘G-B Cb1 class 2a’.
