GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Western Belgium. Silver lamellar coin, Class I with seahorse, var. 1 (realistic profile) ND (early second third of the 1st century BC). LT. missing - DT.188 (Series 31 A) - Scheers 329; Silver - 0.93 g - 16.5 mm - 6 h Exemplar MP no. 195 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – S. Gouet Collection 2006. A wide and very slightly irregular flan for this denarius, with centred and well-struck designs. Both the obverse and reverse are almost complete, with a pleasing grey patina. Condition: Very Good to Superb. The classification of lamellar silver coins, or scyphate denarii, is somewhat confusing, depending on whether they are attributed to the Aulerci, the Bellovaci or the Ambiens. The authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* have ‘divided’ Series 31, which groups them together, into two sub-series, A and B, according to a chronological criterion (?). The traditional attribution is to the Ambiens, but the finds are concentrated amongst the Bellovaci, in the west of Belgium. These coinages may have been more or less contemporary, with very different styles and, in all likelihood, several minting centres. Specimens of this variety are relatively heavy, weighing around 1g. This specimen is of rare quality; the designs are delicate and highly aesthetic. The Victory figure above the horse is found on the heavy drachmas of the Central-West (cf. Bridiers DT. Series 1013 and 1016), but with a long headdress of the kind found on the Cenomani/Carnutes quinarii (see DT. Series 377)
