GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Western Belgium. Silver lamellar coin, Class I with the seahorse on the left, var. 3 (geometric profile) ND (early second third of the 1st century BC). Left side missing – DT.191 (Series 31 A) – Scheers 330 var.; Silver – 0.66 g – 14.5 mm – 9 h MP specimen no. 200 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from C. Burgan, VSO 45, no. 251. A very fine coin, on a blank with a slightly irregular edge, partly original, resulting from the striking of such a thin blank. The obverse and reverse are perfectly centred with a very fine collector’s patina, particularly on the reverse. Very Fine to Superb. The classification of lamellar silver coins, or scyphate denarii, is somewhat confusing, depending on whether they are attributed to the Aulerci, the Bellovaci or the Ambiens. The authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* have ‘split’ Series 31, which groups them together, into two sub-series, A and B, according to a chronological criterion (?). The traditional attribution is to the Ambiens, but the finds are concentrated amongst the Bellovaci, in the west of Belgium. These coinages may have been more or less contemporary, featuring very different styles and, in all likelihood, several minting centres. On the reverse, the ball-headed cross is also found on the hemistateri of Series 396 featuring a wolf (cf. DT. 2397). Although of the same variety as no. 199 in the collection, this specimen differs from it in its more pronounced stylisation and simplification
