GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens / Western Belgium. Silver lamellar coin, Class I with the seahorse on the right, var. 2 (highly stylised) ND (Gallic Wars and second half of the 1st century BC). Left side missing – DT.343 (Series 31 B) – Scheers 336; Silver – 0.57 g – 15 mm – 3 h MP specimen no. 198 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 1997. A denarius on a wide, regular flan for this type, specimens of which are often heavily chipped. A vigorous strike with fine, delicate relief. A grey, dark and lustrous patina in the fields. Very Good to Superb. The classification of lamellar silver coins, or scyphate deniers, is somewhat unclear, depending on whether they are attributed to the Aulerci, the Bellovaci or the Ambiens. The authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* have ‘split’ Series 31, which groups them together, into two sub-series, A and B, according to a chronological criterion (?). The traditional attribution is to the Ambiens, but the finds are concentrated amongst the Bellovaci, in the west of Belgium. These coinages may have been more or less contemporary, with very different styles and, in all likelihood, several minting centres. This variety is characterised by a fragmentation of the obverse and a decorative overlay. The horse’s head serving as the eye could be compared to the equine portrait on the hemistater with the diadem-crowned head (DT. 25). The weights of this variety appear to cluster around 0.60 g. On the reverse of this specimen, the motif in front of the horse, featuring three filaments, is reminiscent of the motif found on certain hemistateri from the 396 and 402 series.
