Description
GAUL - CELTIC Ambiens. Bronze coin with back-to-back seahorses, Class I, var. 2 ND (second third of the 1st century BC and pre-Augustan period). LT.8526 - DT.477 - Scheers 477; Bronze – 2.66 g – 16 mm – 1 h MP specimen no. 202 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 1996. Bronze on a slightly short but regular flan with clearly identifiable motifs. A fine light brown patina, with a small green area on the reverse. TTB. The motif of animals standing back-to-back or alternately arranged (series 52) features horses, wild boars, wolves and even oxen. The bronzes in this series featuring two back-to-back seahorses have minute variations grouped under the name ‘Chilly type’. S. Scheers illustrates, under no. 476, a variant with a small bird in the field to the right of the reverse.
