Description
GAUL - CELTIC Leuques. Potin with a wild boar on the obverse, class Ie1 ND (late 2nd – first half of the 1st century BC). LT.9044 - DT.S226A - Scheers 662; Potin – 4.92 g – 18 mm – 3 h Exemplar MP no. 234 in the book *Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises*, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from P. Crinon in 2007. A fine-quality Potin, with beautiful reliefs. A dark, lustrous patina on the reliefs but with a sort of oxidised matrix remaining in the recesses. Very Good to Superb. This Series 38 comprises around fifteen classes and variants according to the work of S. Scheers. The *Nouvel Atlas* groups them all under ‘Class I with the wild boar’, illustrating four examples and adopting S. Scheers’ typology. In 2002, L.-P. Delestrée noted that “these small pots are scattered across the territories between the Upper Seine and the Middle Rhine. Whilst the highest concentration of finds centres on the oppidum at Boviolles (Meuse), peripheral production cannot be ruled out; indeed, a workshop has just been identified at the Pandours site (Saverne; St. Fichtl excavations). The Rèmes pottery (DT. 153, series 24, class III), which dates back to the early La Tène D1 period (c. 130–120 BC), may have served as a prototype” (cf. Nouvel Atlas, p. 64)
