Description
GAUL - CELTIC Pagus Catuslugi. VIIRICIVS bronze coin, Class III ND (Gallic Wars and the second half of the 1st century BC). LT.8554 - DT.507 - RIG.304; Bronze – 3.82 g – 19.5 mm – 7 h MP specimen no. 168 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 2004 – Argenor October 2000, no. 434. Wide flan with very pronounced casting marks. Vigorous strike and fairly well centred on both sides. Fine dark green patina. Very Good to Superb / Superb. The bronze coins bearing the inscriptions VIIRICIVS or VERICIVS constitute a pagus coinage; 161 specimens across the four classes have been discovered at the Bois-l’Abbé sanctuary (Eu, Seine-Maritime). The name of the pagus is indicated on a plaque discovered there in 1965. The classification in the *Nouvel Atlas* has slightly disrupted the existing system by reclassifying Class II as Class I var. 2, which in turn has resulted in Classes II and III becoming Classes III and IV. We are retaining the previous classification, which could still be refined but should not be simplified. The Class III bronze coins, featuring a head facing right and an anchor on the reverse, bear the legend ‘VIRICI’, which appears to be consistently standard and centripetal (see RIG, pp. 9–10).
