Description
GAUL - CELTIC Pagus Catuslugi. Bronze VIIRICIVS, Class IV ND (Gallic Wars and the second half of the 1st century BC). LT.8541 - DT.508 - RIG.304; Bronze – 3.37 g – 19 mm – 4 h MP specimen no. 162 in the book *Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises*, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 1997. A particularly wide flan with clearly identifiable types despite the even greater width of the edges. Dark green patina with ochre deposits around the reliefs. Very Good to Very Good-Very Good. The bronze coins bearing the inscriptions VIIRICIVS or VERICIVS constitute a pagus coinage; 161 specimens from the four classes have been discovered at the Bois-l’Abbé sanctuary (Eu, Seine-Maritime). The name of the pagus is indicated on a plaque discovered there in 1965. The classification in the *Nouvel Atlas* has slightly altered the existing system by reclassifying Class II as Class I var. 2, which in turn has resulted in Classes II and III becoming Classes III and IV. We retain the previous classification, which could still be refined but should not be simplified. The bronze coins of Class IV are typologically similar to those of Class III, but are of a cruder style and, above all, struck with particularly wide dies. The inscription ‘VIRICIV’ is particularly clear on this specimen; it is more complete than on the bronze coins of Class III.
