GAUL - CELTIC Bellovaci. Quarter-stater in silver, Class I, previously unpublished variant featuring two stars with the letters ‘ND’ (second third of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT.7241 var. – DT.281 var. – Scheers cf. 170 var; Silver – 1.81 g – 16 mm – 10 h MP specimen no. 173 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from C. Burgan in 2004. Coin struck on a wide, oval blank, with a complete but somewhat soft obverse and a superb reverse with a particularly vigorous strike. Fine grey patina. TTB / Superb. The trimetallic ‘star’ set comprises the 42A Series in gold, the 42B series in silver and the 42C series in bronze; these series must have been issued mainly in the vicinity of the sanctuary at Digeon, which is thought to have served as a mint for a small, as yet unidentified tribe, to the west of the Bellovaci’s territory. It should, however, be noted that there is a derived type in silver, or an imitation, originating from the pagus Catuslugi (DT. 284). Although he was the author of the study on ‘the tri-metallic series with the star as a hallmark of Bellovac coinage’ in the Mélanges dedicated to J.-B. Colbert de Beaulieu, L.-P. Delestrée did not include in his Atlas certain types published in 1987. This quart type, featuring the horse on the right with its two highly distinctive stars, is missing from the New Atlas. S.
