Description
GAUL - CELTIC Bellovaci. Bronze coin featuring a rooster and a helmeted head, undated (second third of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT.7224 - DT.517 - Scheers 459-460; Bronze – 2.75 g – 17 mm – 1 h Green patina somewhat flaked on the edge. TTB. Although this bronze coin logically belongs to the ‘rooster set’ typological series, the style of the head, the type of die and the engraving seem to us to be closer to certain coins with a helmeted head from Series 46 (cf. DT. 385, 386 and 386A). Whilst the helmeted bust is very similar, our bronze nevertheless differs in the absence of secondary animals in front of the profile, which is adorned only with large S-shaped motifs. This bronze coin is classified as var. 1 of Class III, featuring a rooster without a human profile. Our specimen was struck from the same dies as the one illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* (DT. 517)
