GAUL - CELTIC Meldes. EPENOS bronze coin, Class I with crescent, ND (second third of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). DT.587 / MEL 3, Class I crescent, see p. 500; Bronze – 3.18 g – 18 mm – 5 h MP specimen no. 152 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from C. Rudd in 2005, list 80, no. 7. A magnificent bronze coin with an extraordinary portrait. The reverse is very vigorously struck, though slightly off-centre, with a clear mark from the edge of the die. Dark, glossy brown patina. Superb. The MEL 3 bronze is divided into two classes, depending on the motif beneath the horse: a crescent on Class 1 and a sort of triskelion on Class 2. A third group should be added, comprising all the more or less stylised imitations (see IDF pp. 500–501). Of the 205 specimens studied, the average weight is 3.00 g. According to B. Foucray, “even though this can only be a hypothesis at this stage, everything suggests that the workshop responsible for these coin issues, which display a very high degree of typological homogeneity, is to be found in the southern part of the civitas of the Meldes” (cf. IDF pp. 241–249)
