GAUL - CELTIC Oars. Bronze REMO / REMO to the triumvirs and the bige ND (second half of the 1st century BC). LT.8040 - DT.593 - Scheers 519-520; Bronze – 2.84 g – 16 mm – 3 h Very good condition. Regarding this bronze, S. Scheers published an interesting article in the September 1992 issue of the BSNF; in which she acknowledges that “the obverse of this bronze coin, which features three busts side by side, is less straightforward to interpret, as its depiction is far from common. In the last century, A. Duchalais identified the triumvirs of 43 BC: Antony, Lepidus and Octavian. This interpretation is highly satisfactory, particularly as a bronze coin struck at Ephesus bears three similar heads side by side, whose identification as the triumvirs of 43 BC seems beyond doubt. The strong resemblance might suggest that the Ephesus bronze served as a model for the ‘Rémi’ coins. The chronological problem (our Gallic bronze coin having been found in the ditches at Alesia) seems to be explained by the uncertain provenance of the coins found in the 19th century and described as originating from the ditches... The most recent dating, placing them in the pre-Augustan period, seems to support S. Scheers’ view
