Description
GAUL - CELTIC Veliocasses. Bronze coin featuring wild boars, from Saint-André-Sur-Cailly, undated (Gallic Wars and the second half of the 1st century BC). LT.7352 - DT.661; Bronze – 2.77 g – 15 mm – 6 h MP specimen no. 165 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from P. Crinon in 2003. A fine little bronze coin, clearly identifiable despite a slightly off-centre strike on the obverse. A vigorous strike with a dark patina. Very Good to Superb. The authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* note that “the intermingling of the Eburovic and Veliocassian coinages in the lower Seine valley makes it difficult to attribute certain types – particularly the uninscribed ones – to one or the other of these two peoples”. Class I, the ‘Saint-André-Sur-Cailly type’, comprises three varieties: var. 1 with the human head to the right (associated with two reverse designs depending on the motif beneath the boar, LT. 7333 and 7349), var. 2 featuring two wild boars, and var. 3 featuring a wild boar and a floral motif (which appears on specimen no. 715 in S. Scheers’s *Traité*, but is missing from the *Nouvel Atlas*). For our var. 2, the type coin included in the *Nouvel Atlas* is the same as that illustrated by S. Scheers (= BnF 7350). The reverse of our specimen corresponds to var. 1b in terms of the portrait (cf. LT. 7349)
