Description
GAUL - CELTIC Parisii. Stater, Class VII, short-edge type, var. 2 with the ND triskelion (first half of the 1st century BC). Left side missing – BnF 1995-318 – DT.88 – Sills 479–480; Gold – 6.95 g – 6.96 mm – 1 h MP specimen no. 159 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from Y. Cellard in 1996. Stater struck on a short, thick blank. The obverse is marred by a significant die break, and the reverse is slightly soft in strike, slightly off-centre to the right. Old collector’s patina, with orange highlights. Very Good / Good to Very Good. This triskelion type was not published until 2000 by M. Dhenin, included in the *Nouvel Atlas* in Class VII, known as the ‘short flan’ variety 2, and subsequently by J. Sills in Mint A Class 7a. This triskelion reverse is associated with a single obverse die showing a significant crack across the face (D24 in J. Sills). Two reverse dies, R32 and R33, are known, depending on whether the ball-tipped cross consists of 4 globules (R32) or 5 (R33). In total, only 8 specimens have been recorded with this triskelion reverse.
