Description
GAUL - CELTIC Lower Normandy / Baïocasses. Stater with wild boars on the obverse, Class I with a figurative profile, var. 2 ND (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT. Cf. J.23 var. – DT.2262; Billon – 5.45 g – 21 mm – 7 h MP specimen no. 97 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from CGB in 2003, MONNAIES 18, no. 882. Slightly short blank with incomplete figures. Fine, slightly porous grey patina. Very Good to Superb. This stater is still considered to be of the “figurative profile” type, although the style is already inferior to that of specimens of var. 1. Its design is described in the *Nouvel Atlas* as “very schematic”. The boar’s head, above the hair, faces left (typical of varieties 2 and 3), whereas it always faces right on variety 1 and in Class II. The obverse of J. 23, as depicted in La Tour, features the boar facing left, but with a horse on the left on the reverse (this class, or variety, is missing from the *Nouvel Atlas*). On the reverse of our specimen, the boar also has a small ring between its legs.
