GAUL - CELTIC Lower Normandy / Baïocasses, uncertain. Quarter of a stater, Epigraphic Class III with no known unit, SANTO-OTOS ND (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). BnF 10305 - DT.2267 A- B, S2267C - RIG.197 - RT SENA 3, Liercourt no. 23, CN HS no. 2 02/2021, p. 75; Blank - 1.29 g - 13 mm - 6 h MP copy no. 100 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from CGB in 2004, MONNAIES 19, no. 463. A fine-quality billon coin of this type, with a perfectly centred obverse and reverse, though still on a blanks that is too short. Grey, crystallised patina. TTB to Superb. This quart, previously known from a single specimen (BnF 10305) bearing a fragment of the legend recorded in the RIG, is now better understood, with a dozen new specimens having come to light since 2003. All these coins appear to have been struck from a single pair of dies, which helps to clarify the complex composition of the obverse and reverse, despite the narrowness of the blanks. The legend, reconstructed from the known specimens, appears to read SANTO / CORI-OTOS. Its meaning and any possible link to a particular people still appear to require confirmation.
