Description
GAUL - CELTIC Per-Armorican / Abrincatui. Stater with a crescent-shaped profile, Class III ‘with an ornamented cheek’, variant 1 with a small, truncated head facing north (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT.J.13 - DT.2276-2281; Billon – 6.5 g – 20 mm – 6 h MP specimen no. 90 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from CGB in 2004, MONNAIES 20, no. 231 (indicated as probably originating from a hoard in Jersey). Short blank with strike splinters. The off-centre strike on the obverse allows secondary motifs to be seen behind the head. Reverse complete but rather soft. Grey patina with minute surface deposits. Very Good / Good to Very Good. This specimen might seem difficult to classify, given the off-centre alignment on the obverse. However, this overlooks certain consistent features of this coinage; this type of empty almond-shaped eye, without a marked pupil, is characteristic of var. 1, with the small head cut off in front of the face. The centring of this stater allows for an almost complete boar on the reverse, and, above all, provides a clearer view of the headdress with its two beaded cords that meet behind the head and end in scrollwork, almost forming a bun.
