GAUL - CELTIC Per-Armorican / Abrincatui. Quarter-round coin, Class III ‘bare cheek, var. 1 with a ball-headed cross, ND’ (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT.J.11 - DT.2271; Billon – 1.76 g – 13.5 mm – 1 h MP specimen no. 91 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from C. Rudd in 2003 - Anthony McCammon Collection, Baldwin’s 20, 11 October 1999, Fig. 44. Irregular blank with dents along the edge. The obverse and reverse designs are well centred, but the strike is somewhat soft in places. Dark and uneven patina. TTB. For the series with the luniform profile, the division coins are so rare that their classification appears to be based solely on the few specimens selected as type coins, as they are identifiable, complete and well struck. Our specimen appears to correspond more or less to DT. 2271. The British Museum has a particularly fine collection of quarter-denomination coins of this type (around forty) following the donation by Sir Arthur John Evans in 1919. Examination of this collection reveals some interesting variants, both in terms of the hair and the motifs in front of the face, in front of the horse (a vexillum or a cross with a ball) or beneath the horse (a single lyre or a lyre between two radiating rings).
