GAUL - CELTIC Armorica / Veneti. Billon stater, Series 353A, Class II, featuring a reclining figure, undated (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). DT.2288 – Rennes 433–447; Billon – 6.33 g – 23 mm – 6 h Specimen MP no. 64 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from P. Crinon in 2006. Very wide flan with a centred obverse but a soft strike. The reverse is slightly off-centre at the top but has a vigorous strike, with the imprint of the die edge clearly visible. Very Good to Very Good-Very Good / Very Good-Very Good. Coins of this type are thought to be among the oldest from the Veneti’s billon coinage. The Pipriac hoard (1908) contained a few coins of this type, some of which are now in the Rennes Museum. It is also interesting to note that the vessel from this hoard contained, alongside them, a number of Picton electrum staters and Armorican billons. More recently, the Piolaine hoard, which contained so many Venetic billons, had very few staters featuring the small reclining figure; of all the coins from this hoard held at the MAN, only two (nos. 6864 and 6865) belong to this class, one of which is in a poor state of preservation.
