GAUL - CELTIC Armorica / Rédons. Stater ‘with beardless profile’, Class I, var. 3, 4-spoked wheel ND (late first half of the 1st century BC and the Gallic Wars). LT.6774 - DT.2313-2314 - MAN 6579-6708 and 6723; Billon - 6.9 g - 21 mm - 9 h MP specimen no. 83 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises”, by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit – acquired from P. Crinon in 2002. A fine specimen on a regular flan with well-centred designs. There is a slight lack of strike on the obverse in front of the face and on the reverse on the charioteer. Dark, glossy patina. Very Good to Superb. Even more so than the coriosolite coinage, the Rédons coinage has been completely re-examined in the *Nouvel Atlas*. Instead of nine classes—which were sometimes very difficult and subjective to distinguish—the authors of the *Nouvel Atlas* have retained only three classes: I ‘beardless profile’ (with no fewer than five varieties), II ‘bearded profile’ and III for the Mordelles type. With its four-spoked wheel, this stater is a fine example of variety 3. According to the Rennes Museum’s classification, this stater would belong to class IV. The Piolaine hoard contained a wealth of this type, as evidenced by the 130 specimens held at the MAN.
